Network Design & Troubleshooting

Your network is a connected system.

Wi-Fi is only one part of the network. Internet service, routing, firewall policies, switching, cabling, wireless access points and the devices themselves all affect the final connection users experience.

End-to-End Network Follow the connection from the internet to the user. When a network is unreliable, the important question is not simply “is the Wi-Fi bad?” — it is where along the connection path the problem begins.
Connected
01
Internet NBN, Starlink or ISP The external connection supplying the site and the first point to rule out when performance drops.
02
Gateway Router & firewall Controls routing, security, internet access, VPNs and how traffic moves between networks.
03
Wired Network Switching & cabling Carries network traffic between infrastructure, access points, servers and wired devices.
04
Wireless Wi-Fi access points Provides wireless coverage, capacity and roaming across the site when correctly positioned and configured.
05
Services Servers, NAS & phones Business systems may depend on reliable local network access even when the internet itself is working.
06
Users PCs, laptops & devices The device at the end of the path can also be the source of a connection or performance problem.
Common Failure Points

Similar symptoms can come from very different causes.

“The internet is slow” can describe an ISP problem, overloaded Wi-Fi, poor signal, bad cabling, a faulty switch, DNS problems, a firewall policy or simply one misbehaving computer. Good troubleshooting separates those layers.

Internet WAN instability Provider outages, poor service quality, modem issues or inconsistent Starlink/NBN performance.
Wireless Coverage & capacity Weak signal, interference, too few access points or too many users sharing the same radio capacity.
Wired Switching & cabling Bad ports, damaged cabling, loops, negotiation problems or incorrectly configured managed switches.
Gateway Router & firewall DNS, DHCP, NAT, routing, security policies or underpowered equipment can all affect connectivity.
Device One computer only Drivers, local configuration, malware or hardware can make a network problem appear site-wide when it is not.
Voice Phones & real-time traffic Voice and video are often the first services to expose latency, packet loss or unstable connectivity.
Addressing DHCP, DNS & IP conflicts Devices may appear connected while name resolution or address assignment is actually failing.
Design Network grown without a plan Years of added routers, extenders, switches and unmanaged devices can create instability and confusion.
Network Diagnosis

Find the bottleneck before replacing equipment.

Replacing a router does not fix bad Wi-Fi design. Adding another access point does not fix a failing internet service. Faster internet does not repair bad cabling. The useful first step is identifying which layer is limiting or disrupting the network.

Test Measure, don't guess Compare wired and wireless performance, latency, signal and behaviour across different points in the network.
Trace Follow the path Identify whether failure begins at the device, LAN, gateway or external internet connection.
Review Check configuration Review routing, DHCP, DNS, firewall rules, VLANs and other settings where relevant.
Improve Fix the weak point Upgrade or redesign the specific part of the network that is actually creating the problem.

Business Networks & Wi-Fi

Infrastructure built around how the site actually works.

Business networking is not just about getting an internet connection into the building. Coverage, capacity, security, switching, phones, storage and user movement all affect how the network should be designed.

Business Wi-Fi

Good Wi-Fi is designed around coverage, capacity and movement.

One access point with a strong signal is not automatically a good wireless network. Building materials, device density, interference, outdoor areas and how users move through the site all influence access point placement and configuration.

)))
Coverage Reach the right areas Position access points around usable coverage rather than simply mounting them wherever cabling is easiest.
≋
Capacity Support actual users A busy office, accommodation site or public area can need more capacity even where signal strength looks good.
↔
Roaming Move without dropping out Multi-AP networks should allow mobile users and wireless phones to move through the site sensibly.
More access points is not always the answer. Poor placement, excessive transmit power, bad channel use or weak backhaul can make additional hardware perform worse, not better.
Switching

Managed wired infrastructure

Switches connect access points, servers, phones, workstations, printers and other devices. Managed switching can provide visibility, VLANs, PoE and better control over how business traffic is organised.

Managed Switches PoE VLANs Uplinks Monitoring
Gateway & Security

Routers and business firewalls

The gateway sits between the business and the internet. Depending on the environment, it may also provide firewall security, VPN access, VLAN routing, filtering and control over outbound and inbound traffic.

Firewalls VPN Routing Policies Segmentation
Network Infrastructure

The components behind a reliable business network.

The exact design varies by site. A small office may only need a well-configured gateway, switch and access point. Larger or more complex environments may need multiple wireless zones, network segmentation, storage, voice and remote connectivity.

Wireless Access points Indoor and outdoor Wi-Fi positioned around coverage, capacity, roaming and the structure of the site.
Core Routers & gateways Internet routing, DHCP, DNS forwarding, VPNs, failover and other gateway functions.
Security Business firewalls Policy control, filtering, network security services and visibility appropriate to the business.
Wired Managed switches PoE, VLANs, port management and reliable wired connectivity for infrastructure and workstations.
Storage Servers & NAS Local storage, shared data, backups and other services that depend on reliable LAN connectivity.
Voice Business phones VoIP and Teams-based phone systems depend on stable connectivity, sensible switching and reliable internet.
Internet NBN & Starlink Internet connectivity integrated into the network rather than treated as a separate box at the edge.
Remote VPN & remote access Secure connectivity between users, sites or business systems when remote network access is required.
Network Segmentation

Not every device needs to live on the same network.

Business networks may benefit from separating staff, guest Wi-Fi, phones, cameras, servers or specialised equipment. VLANs and firewall policies can reduce unnecessary access between device groups while keeping required services available.

Staff Business devices Workstations and authorised devices can remain on the network intended for normal business operations.
Guest Internet without internal access Guest wireless users generally do not need access to printers, storage or internal business systems.
Devices Cameras & IoT Security cameras and specialised devices can be separated from ordinary staff systems where appropriate.
Voice Phones & communications Voice devices can be organised separately where the design benefits from dedicated policies or traffic management.
Internet Connectivity

NBN, Starlink or a combination.

The best connection depends on location, service availability, reliability requirements and what the business actually does online. In some environments, a second connection can also provide useful resilience.

Fixed NBN & business internet Suitable where a reliable fixed service is available and meets the site's performance requirements.
Satellite Starlink Useful for locations where fixed connectivity is limited, unreliable or unavailable.
Resilience Backup connectivity A secondary WAN or alternative connection can reduce downtime for businesses that depend heavily on internet access.

Network Troubleshooting Cairns

Fix the cause, not just the symptom.

Unreliable networks often accumulate quick fixes over time: another extender, another router, another unmanaged switch. Before adding more equipment, it is usually better to understand why the existing network is struggling.

Wi-Fi Dead zones & weak signal Parts of the building or property have poor wireless coverage or devices disconnect when users move around.
Reliability Random dropouts Internet or network access disappears intermittently and returns without a clear explanation.
Performance Slow internet or LAN Speed tests, file access, cloud applications or normal browsing perform far below expectations.
Wireless Wi-Fi strong but still slow Signal strength looks excellent but congestion, interference, backhaul or internet performance is limiting the connection.
Devices Some equipment works, some doesn't Printers, phones, PCs or other devices behave differently even though they appear to use the same network.
Infrastructure Too many boxes Multiple routers, switches, extenders and old devices have accumulated with no clear network design.
Business Phones or Teams calls break up Voice and video expose packet loss, latency, unstable wireless connections and poor internet quality quickly.
Expansion Network no longer fits the site More staff, new offices, extra buildings or new equipment have outgrown what the original network was designed to handle.
Network Assessment Work from evidence before recommending new hardware. A useful network assessment identifies what exists, where performance breaks down and whether the solution is configuration, repositioning, replacement or redesign.
Diagnose First
01
Understand Define the actual problem Identify who is affected, where it happens and whether the issue is constant or intermittent.
02
Map Understand the network Review the router, firewall, switching, access points, internet service and important connected equipment.
03
Test Measure the behaviour Compare wired and wireless performance, connectivity, signal, latency and other relevant indicators.
04
Isolate Find the weak point Determine whether the fault sits with the ISP, gateway, LAN, wireless network, configuration or device.
05
Improve Fix what actually needs fixing Reconfigure, reposition, replace or redesign the relevant part of the network rather than everything.
Network Upgrades

Improvement does not always mean replacing everything.

Existing infrastructure may still be useful. Sometimes the biggest improvement comes from better access point placement, cleaner configuration, removing redundant equipment or replacing one weak component rather than rebuilding the entire network.

Reposition Improve Wi-Fi placement Access points mounted in poor locations can create coverage problems even when the hardware itself is good.
Simplify Remove unnecessary equipment Old routers, extenders and unmanaged devices can create complexity without improving the network.
Upgrade Replace bottlenecks Older gateways, switches or wireless equipment can be replaced where they genuinely limit performance or reliability.
Organise Improve configuration DHCP, DNS, VLANs, channels, SSIDs, firewall rules and other settings can all affect how well the system behaves.
New Offices & Site Upgrades

Plan the network before everyone moves in.

A new office, renovation or site expansion is an opportunity to think about coverage, wired ports, PoE, phones, cameras, storage and internet before equipment starts being added wherever space is available.

Internet Connection planning NBN, Starlink, business broadband or backup connectivity based on site requirements.
Cabling Ports & infrastructure Plan wired connectivity and PoE requirements before access points, phones and other devices are installed.
Wireless Coverage planning Choose access point locations around the building layout and expected user behaviour.
Core Gateway & switching Size the router, firewall and switching around the number of users, devices and services.
Network Not Performing Properly? Before adding another extender or router, find out what is actually wrong.

We can assess the existing network, isolate the weak point and recommend the most sensible improvement rather than simply adding more equipment.

Network & Wi-Fi Questions

Before you upgrade the network.

Network problems are often blamed on the nearest visible device, but poor performance can begin anywhere from the internet service through to the end user. These are some of the common questions we hear before a network assessment or upgrade.

Security Firewalls & segmentation Business firewall configuration and sensible separation between different device groups.
Internet NBN & Starlink Connectivity integrated into the wider network rather than treated as an isolated service.
Why is my Wi-Fi slow even when the signal looks strong?

Signal strength is only one part of wireless performance. Congestion, interference, overloaded access points, poor backhaul, channel use or the internet connection itself can all make Wi-Fi slow even when the device shows a strong signal.

Should I add a Wi-Fi extender or another access point?

It depends on the cause of the problem. A properly connected access point is usually a more controlled solution than repeatedly extending an already weak wireless signal, but placement and network design matter. Adding more wireless equipment without understanding the existing coverage can sometimes make performance worse.

What is the difference between a router and a Wi-Fi access point?

A router or gateway connects networks and normally controls how traffic reaches the internet. An access point provides wireless connectivity into the existing network. Consumer devices often combine both jobs in one box, while business networks commonly separate them for better coverage, management and flexibility.

Can you improve Wi-Fi across a large office or property?

Yes. Larger sites often need multiple access points positioned around the areas where coverage and capacity are actually required. Building materials, distances, outdoor areas, user density and the available wired or wireless backhaul all influence the final design.

Can Starlink be used with a business firewall or network?

Yes. Starlink can be used as the internet connection feeding a separate business router or firewall where the network design supports it. It can also be useful in locations where fixed services are unavailable or unsuitable.

Does a small business really need a firewall?

Every internet-connected network already has some form of gateway security, but a dedicated business firewall can provide additional visibility, policies, VPN access, filtering and segmentation. Whether that extra capability is justified depends on the size, risk and requirements of the business.

What are VLANs and do I need them?

VLANs allow one physical network infrastructure to be divided into separate logical networks. They can be useful for separating staff devices, guest Wi-Fi, cameras, phones or other equipment. A small uncomplicated network may not need extensive segmentation, while larger or more security-conscious environments often benefit from it.

Can you troubleshoot an existing network instead of replacing it?

Yes. Existing equipment may still be perfectly usable. We can review the layout, configuration and behaviour of the network and identify whether the issue comes from placement, configuration, internet service, cabling, switching or a specific device before recommending replacement.

Do you provide onsite network support in Cairns?

Yes. Many network problems are best investigated onsite because the physical layout, wireless coverage, cabling, network equipment and connected devices are part of the environment being diagnosed.

Can you set up networks for a new office or business site?

Yes. A new site can be planned around internet service, router or firewall requirements, switching, Wi-Fi, wired ports, PoE devices, phones, storage and future expansion rather than adding those components one at a time after the move.

Network Problem or New Project? Start with the site, the symptoms and what the network needs to support.

From one unreliable Wi-Fi area to a complete business network upgrade, we can assess the environment and work toward a practical solution.
